World of Warcraft Upgrades and Item Upgrading

Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses, such as PvE damage and crit chance.

If the template for upgrading a weapon is in %, the weapon will gain 3% of its previous damage every time it is upgraded.

The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the item's current level. The cost increases with the item's level.

Components

Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into weapons, armor, and trinkets in order to provide a stat bonus or extra effect when they're used. They can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors, trading with other players, or looting. Certain upgrades come with special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into any equipment that has a slot to accommodate them; the item must be at a minimum upgraded to blue level in order for the component to be inserted. Upgrade components, unlike other modifications, can only be applied once. They cannot be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and Enrichments are a kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary and Ascended equipment, as well other items that are not ascended. Infusions and Enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment from the ascended state or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade could include a suffix or prefix that alters the name of the equipment with the upgrade (for instancefor example "Canthan Armor Insignia is changed to Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). These points can be used to level up the item, and when enough points have been earned, the upgrade can be claimed and any additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When an item is upgraded by a player, the base item is replaced with a different item of the same type. The same armor will receive an weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item will come with a bonus of its own. This can be a disadvantage, as it can cause the item to become more expensive if you do not require it.

Item upgrades can sometimes be rerolled if the player has enough tokens to do this. This causes the item upgrader to be traded for a new one, which will have an initial level and a totally different set of bonuses. This is useful for certain items, but it's not something that should be performed frequently, since it can waste lots of resources.

Some upgrades can increase their value and allow players to modify their gear. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, as it provides a buff if the player continuously enters or exits the water.
